Primary Care Q&A

What is primary care?

Primary care medicine is health care focused on every aspect of your wellness. Common elements of primary care include:

  • Health promotion
  • Health maintenance
  • Preventive care
  • Disease prevention
  • Counseling
  • Patient education
  • Chronic care management

The primary care team at Joel Wellness Clinic treats every member of the family age 16 and older. They take the time not to learn just about your symptoms but about you as a whole person.

Dr. Joel approaches your care as an evidence-based physician, meaning that she doesn’t prescribe medications, order treatments, or order tests unless research has shown that those methods have proven successful or useful for patients like you.

Dr. Joel believes in closing gaps in care whether it is related to diabetes or another chronic condition or preventive care measures like annual physical, mammogram, colonoscopy, pap smears etc.

What conditions do primary care doctors treat?

Primary care doctors treat a wide range of conditions that affect you, literally, from head to toe. Examples of primary care conditions include:

  • High blood pressure
  • Diabetes
  • Acid reflux disease
  • Heart disease
  • Skin rashes
  • Cold and flu
  • Sore throat
  • Fever
  • Back pain

They also provide routine preventive health care services, such as annual physical exams, immunizations, and booster shots.

What happens during a primary care appointment?

Dr. Joel and her staff will follow all covid protocols currently recommended by CDC.

Because every person has unique health care concerns and requirements, every primary care appointment is different.

However, when you come into Joel Wellness Clinic for a primary care visit, you can expect to begin your visit by discussing your overall health with Dr. Joel, including any specific issues you’re experiencing, such as pain or other symptoms of illness.

During this visit, Dr. Joel also checks your vitals, such as your:

  • Temperature
  • Blood pressure
  • Heart rate

She may also check your height and weight.

Based on your personal chart, the concerns you express, and your medical findings, the team provides services such as:

  • Flu shots
  • Urinalysis
  • Wound suturing
  • Sling placement
  • Bandage wrapping

Same day urgent visits are available as in-person or telehealth visits for complaints like cough, sinus issues, ear infection, flu-like symptoms, isolated joint pain, rash or other acute short sick visits. These visits are available via phone call. Please call the office if you need a same-day visit.

If your team discovers that you need specialized treatment that they can’t provide, they help you find a specialist who can help you diagnose and manage more complex conditions.

Primary care keeps every member of the family healthy, well-adjusted, and ready to take on each new day with confidence. To schedule your visit or a visit for a loved one, call Joel Wellness Clinic or book an appointment online today.
